Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) last week seized a number of bales of used undergarments that were on sale in downtown Kampala. UNBS says it seized the used clothing because most of the items were stained and were considered a danger to women’s health.
UNBS’s action may have saved a handful of women in downtown Kampala who would have bought these undergarments, but the health of millions of other women around the country who have for years bought these items is already compromised.
This action is therefore, too little and too late as millions of poor Ugandan men and women wear used clothing, under-wears inclusive.
