There is no surer sign of decay in a country than to see the rites of religion held in contempt.

There are numerous examples around the world and even locally in Uganda here. Religion has become a tool used by many to manipulate and also do alot of other hypocritical exploitation (military intelligence inclusive).

I start with a Guyana tragedy in US in 1978. The Story of Jim Jones, also called The Mad Messiah, is a 1980 television miniseries about the Peoples Temple led by Jim Jones, and their 1978 mass suicide at Jonestown. Based on the book by Charles A. Krause, entitled Guyana Massacre: The Eyewitness Account, the film was originally shown on television on April 15, 1980. This thing was bad. And it is as if these men do their worst confidently when they are under cover of religion.

In July 2007, The Government of Uganda asked the Police for comprehensive reports on pastors in Kampala allegedly involved in fraudulent activities. This was following reports of so many fraudulent behavior that had been reported to then ethics minister James Nsaba Buturo.

What does this tell us? It tells us that these realities are with us and we need to discuss about it. It does not only involve pastors, other religions are also affected and examples are many. The “fruits” of these are the media stories that has lately been awash with reports about the activities of pastors, many of which border on crime.

The Sunday Vision over three weeks this month serialized the activities of pastors who coerce their flock into sowing their valuables in exchange for blessings from God. Several people have alleged that pastors take their vehicles and land titles with promises that they will cure them of HIV/AIDS, among other miracles.

Very many youths and innocent women are held hostage in churches by pastors who reap from them while pushing them into ‘dream’ life of Miracles. The examples are many.

THE PROPOSED SOLUTION
As Nicollo Machiavelli said; There is no surer sign of decay in a country than to see the rites of religion held in contempt.

The way religion is being handled todate in Uganda is a serious sign of societal decay. So, responsible citizens should begin to resist things which are not normal.

Parents are called upon to monitor where their children are attending prayers. Do not trust “religious people” 100%, take a second look and verify their activities.
