President Museveni is celebrating after having silenced the defiance campaign in Parliament. This showed clearly after he successfully presented the State of the Nation Address un-heckled. Museveni right away took to the social media and thanked the Speaker MPs twice in for bearing with him throughout his flat speech.
This was unexpected of many MPs who just a year ago had jumped on to the Defiance Campaign wagon spearheaded by Rtd Col Dr. Kiiza Besigye to protest the flawed outcomes of the 2016 presidential elections.
To protest the unfair treatment to Kiiza Besigye, the likes of Allan Ssewanyana (Makindye), Francis Mwijukye (Buhweju) and Munyagwa Mubarak (Kawempe South) walked out in protest it as Museveni delivered the state of the nation address. Later when he was reading the Budget Speech, Hon Betty Nambooze (Mukono Municipality) also walked out.
It was evident though that Museveni was at ease this time as he faced a friendly opposition.
The many of Pro defiance MPs choose to keep away from the Tuesday Serena sitting.
One would envisage that there is a lot to protest, like the continued curtailing of the movements of Mumbere the Rwenzururu King, th etoutres at Nalufenya and many others. It is still baffling that even the Leader of Opposition sat through the lengthy speech despite having earlier vehemently voiced concern over the violation of the rights of her King.
Sources privy to inside information intimated to Spear News that Museveni, weary of last year’s embarrassment sought for protection from Speaker of Parliament so that opposition MPs would let him deliver his address uninterrupted. The Speaker is said to have used her good office to neutralize the opposition and isolate the pro- defiance MPs.
